“Quite simply, a masterpiece,” says Warren Bennis. What dazzled Bennis, one of the most influential scholars today in the field of managerial leadership, is a breathtakingly brilliant book called The Connective Edge: Leading in an Interdependent World (Jossey-Bass, 1996) written by Jean Lipman-Blumen, the Bradshaw Professor of Public Policy and professor of organizational behavior at the Peter F. Walter Truett Anderson on "Constructing Reality" |
Thursday, 01 July 1999 03:00 |
The featured speaker for the April 9th meeting of the Foundation was author and political scientist Walter T. Anderson, who spoke on the topic “Constructing Reality in the 21st Century.” Anderson opened his talk with a lengthy quote from Ernest Becker to the effect that while human striving is motivated almost exclusively by social fictions of their own making, nevertheless it is both amazing and potentially liberating that human beings have been able to take a step back, analyze their own motives, and recognize the fictional character of their own hero systems.

Susan Woolsey, who had worked hard with local school and youth group directors to assure that Jim's visit would come about, writes: "Jim is really talented! He tells wonderful existential-type stories that captivate 5th and 6th graders along with older children, and result in their begging for more! He is also a very good artist and has developed a whole series of cartoons and coloring pages to emphasize his Life Skills."

It is then that we are striving hardest to establish this integral domain of our inner identity and our chum helps us. Remember that time?

April 9th — Constructing reality in the 21st Century |
Thursday, 01 April 1999 03:00 |
In The Birth and Death of Meaning, Ernest Becker wrote that the discovery in the 20th century of the constructed - in a sense, fictitious - nature of social reality might be "one of the great, liberating breakthroughs of all time." Certainly the study of how we construct reality has been one of the century's major projects - a dominant concern in many fields including anthropology, sociology, psychology, philosophy, and the brain sciences - and much progress has been made.

Meaning, time and architecture — April 20th |
Thursday, 01 April 1999 03:00 |
The buildings that we construct serve the purpose of human dwelling on Earth. But dwelling on Earth is not merely surviving; it is a matter of seeking significance. For architecture, then, to fully serve the needs of our dwelling it must be symbolic as well as functional. Buildings, moreover, are, in many respects, larger than life: they surround us and shape our movements and activities; they persist through time in ways that we cannot -- for generations, often, or for centuries.
